The Catena Malbec is one of the top Argentinian Malbec wines in the market today. Its 2019 vintage year wine is featured in Vivino’s Best Wines under $20 and has garnered multiple recognitions from different wine enthusiasts.
A number of well-known wine critics have given high ratings on this wine. Its 2021 vintage year received a 91-point rating from James Suckling and also a 90-point rating from Tim Atkin.
The Catena Malbec is produced by Catena Wines. Founded by Argentina’s Bodega Capetana Zapata in 1902, the family has continued the winery for over four generations.Â
And they have become one of the most well-known wineries in Argentina. And they have one of the most accessible Malbec in the entire US and you’ll find it in almost any wine retail store.
The design of the Catena Malbec bottle features the Adrianna Vineyard which is almost 5,000 feet in elevation and is called by many the Grand Cru of South America. On the glass, the wine has a dark plum color.
Once I popped the bottle open, I was immediately overwhelmed with dark fruit aromas with notes of plum, vanilla, cinnamon, and a hint of oak. There are also some blueberries, raspberries, and a hint of licorice at the end.
On the palate, the dark fruit flavors stand out the most from the Catena Malbec. There’s also some mild vanilla, hints of ripe berries, some mocha, spices, and oak.Â
This wine is dry, full-bodied, has bright acidity, and has soft tannins. The strong fruits combined with the ripe berries and vanilla creates its long and smooth finish.
The Catena Malbec is available in almost all wine retailers. It has an average price of ~$20, but if you look intently enough, you’ll find that some places sell it for a lot less.Â
In Costco, we found that it’s only sold at $15.99.
