Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Wagner family is one of Napa Valley’s older family-owned and operated wineries. And it is possibly the best producing wine family in the entire world!

No, they don’t produce good wines, but instead, great wines! And their signature, best, and most famous red wine is the Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon.

It’s the quintessential Napa Valley Cabernet that comes second to none!

They began in the late 1960s but officially started Caymus in 1972. Today, Caymus is considered one of the most celebrated wines in Napa Valley.

A Visit to Caymus Winery in Napa Valley

A beautiful winery in the heart of the Rutherford District in Napa Valley.

They offer a great deal in terms of allowing you to use your tasting fees ($50 per person) as a credit to purchase their wines. Therefore, it’s a must-visit winery!

Not to mention, they have very informative customer service. And they will give you every detail about the history of Caymus while, of course, enjoying every sip of the best wines Napa Valley has to offer!

Quick Facts About Caymus Wine

  • “Caymus” was named after the name of a group of American Indians living in the Yountville area. Also, Rancho Caymus was the name of the original Mexican land grant in the area that eventually became what is known today as the Rutherford District in Napa Valley, CA.
  • Prior to being planted with Cabernet Sauvignon vines,  the vineyard land was primarily used as a fruit ranch.
  • They hired Napa winemaker Randy Dunn as their first winemaker in 1975, making wines at Caymus through its 1985 vintage.
  • Best to drink later! You should cellar their Cabernet Sauvignon for up to 10 years and up to 30 years for their special collection Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Their ‘Special Collection’ is chosen via a blind taste test by the family to determine which will be the wine.
  • In old times, the Caymus Special Selection took four years aging in new and old French oak barrels. Today, they use around 90% new oak barrels with a reduced aging time to around 18 months.
  • While they use grapes grown on over 60 acres of Caymus properly, Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon also included grapes farmed in 8 of the 16 appellations in Napa.
  • Caymus Special Selection is the only wine to have the “Wine of the Year” honor from the Wine Spectator magazine twice – its 1984 and 1990 vintages.
  • Although they are famous for their Cabernet Sauvignon, they also produce small runs of great Zinfandels. I had it with Korean BBQ… AMAZING!

My Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2019 Review

Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 wine

This Cabernet maintains the standard that Caymus Winery is known for – rich on the palate, velvety smooth (very creamy texture), and luxurious, elegant finish.

Overall, it’s a great-tasting California wine. It has rich flavors of blackberry, dark plum, cherry, warmed vanilla, and hint of mocha notes. With velvety tannins to finish, this has to be one of my favorite Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons.

And it is one of the highly sought-after wines by both wine lovers and collectors worldwide. They don’t last very long on shelves. They never do!

Where to Buy

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can get a bottle of Caymus at Costco. But unfortunately, you won’t see many discounts because of its popularity and deliciousness.

So, buying it online is always a great option, like getting Caymus on Vivino!
