The Matua Sauvignon Blanc is currently featured in Vivino’s Best Wines under $20 with its 2021 vintage bottle. Unknown to most people, Matua is the very first winery to produce a Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand back in 1974.
After several years, the winery has won several awards and accolades. They also won the Champion Winemaker of the Year in 2015 three years in a row with 16 trophies and 68 gold medals in two years. Additionally, the Matua Sauvignon Blanc received a 90-point rating by Wine Spectator.
This Sauvignon Blanc is produced by Matua Wines with founders Bill and Ross Spence who both grew up in a long line of winemakers. They began commercializing their Sauvignon Blanc in the early 70s.
Matua’s vineyards are found in Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, and Central Otago. In 2001, Beringer-Blass Wine Estates invested in Matua Wines while Bill and Ross are co-managing the business.
With all the awards and accolades of Matua and this wine, there’s no doubt that this is one of the most sought-after wines in the market today.
Looking at its design, I find the bottle of Matua Sauvignon Blanc appealing. It has a minimalistic, blue-colored design that immediately tells you that it’s refreshing and cool. What’s more is that it has a “thermographic label”, temperature reactive snowflake, that turns blue when it’s chilled and informs you when it’s ready to drink.
The wine is pale white gold with a tiny bit of effervescence.
The Matua Sauvignon Blanc has plenty of citrus aromas.. At first, I get an over-ripe lemon, grapefruit, and a mellow hint of tropical fruit notes.
On the palate, I get a tangy, lemony, and grapefruit taste. There’s also some taste of green apple, passionfruit, peach, and a hint of grass. Its citrus taste is refreshing, light, and well-balanced.
This wine is light-bodied, dry, and has a good amount of acidity. It has a refreshing and crisp finish that’s perfect for a hot summer day.
The Matua Sauvignon Blanc is available in almost all wine stores including Total Wines, Trader Joe’s, Target, Vivino, Drizly, and most grocery stores that sell wines. Its price ranges anywhere between $9 to $14 depending on where you buy it.
No, Matua Sauvignon Blanc is not sweet. It’s dry, acidic, and contains 13% alcohol content.
Tasting the Matua Sauvignon Blanc, you get lemon, lime, grapefruit, and passionfruit. There’s also green apple and grass that completes its citrus and vibrant flavor.
