Living in New York City and having many friends who reside in New Jersey, I have visited Bottle King quite a number of times. Since it opened in 1969, they now has 15 stores throughout New Jersey and has become the largest retailer of wine in the state.
A majority of New Jersey residents I know, either shop at Total Wine or Bottle King. Recently Bottle King was named Wine Enthusiast 50 Best Wine Retailers in the USA.
You can find good deals and some great prices at Bottle King, especially with the member prices.
So for all you New Jersey customers, here is our top 10 list for best red wines under $20 at Bottle King. Please keep in mind all prices are member prices. And we gathered all this information from their location in Princeton.
It’s not easy to grow grapes on the hillside. But that is what this Juggernaut has done. A hillside vineyard will have less access to water and not hold as many nutrients. This stresses the vines and results in less production of the grape. The environment causes the vines to struggle, which results in a tasty complex wine that many can afford.
Tasting Notes: Ripe berries, complex, and rich
This Malbec is made from a wine maker that makes award-winning wines from two wineries, one in France and one in Argentina (the two best regions for Malbec).
Tasting Notes: Plum, spices, tannins, oak
Well-known winery that’s been around for now over 100 years. The winery is recognized for their pioneering role in leading Argentina’s Malbec revolution. So in other words if you like Argentina Malbecs, you are more than likely enjoying this wine. Just give it time to open up.
Tasting Notes: Earthy, spice, dark fruit, blackberry
A Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for less than $20 is a steal. And this one is as good as it gets value-wise. Very popular and accessible wine that has good reviews.
Tasting Notes: Blackberry, Cherry, vanilla, oak, milk chocolate
Another solid Napa County Cabernet for a great price. Explained perfectly by the winemaker…“With a kiss of Syrah, a dash of Zinfandel he helped created Oberon’s deep colors, supple silky tannins, and vibrant black cherry and spices.”

If you are looking to try something different and you enjoy New World wines, try this Australian Shiraz. The name itself is a conversation starter and you won’t find it hard to be intrigued.

Zinfandel is truly an American/CA grape. And this blend comprised of Zinfandel comes from acclaimed vineyards in Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander Valley.

Barbera are meant to be everyday wines at good prices. This wine comes from three vineyards with the highest classification in Italy (DOCG). Give it a try if you are looking for good valued Italian wines.

From the renowned Willamette Valley in Oregon, this winery normally makes higher-end Pinot Noirs. This entry-level Pinot of theirs is a pretty good expression of the valley. If you enjoy Oregon Pinots, this one may be for you.
Tasting Notes: Earthy, cherry, mushroom, and medium body
Large winery making good affordable wines. Try this if you enjoy California cabs. Dark fruits, medium tannins, and oak. Great value if purchased under $20.
